The Amityville Horror

Year: 1979
Director: Stuart Rosenberg
Writer: Sandor Stern, George Lutz, Cathy Lutz, Jay Anson (novel)
Rating: 7/10

Showed great promise for a classic horror flick, but muddles about without drawing together several of the main plotlines (or what could have been plotlines).

Carrie

Year: 1976
Director: Brian De Palma
Writer: Lawrence Cohen
Rating: 6/10

Based upon a Stephen King novel; some memorable scenes, but the unsteady pacing and general directorial sloppiness bring it down to to 1970s B-movie horror.

Head Cleaner

Year: 2008
Director: Tall Reed
Writer: Tall Reed
Rating: 9/10

Avant garde video collage; the first half is almost nauseating in its effectiveness, but the VHS clippings that follow fall short.

Sweet Movie

Year: 1974
Director: Dusan Makavejev
Writer: Dusan Makavejev
Rating: 7/10

Some great surreal moments, but ultimately fails to transcend its reliance upon shock value.

Ivan Groznyy I (Ivan The Terrible Part I)

Year: 1944
Director: Sergei Eisenstein
Writer: Sergei Eisenstein
Rating: 9/10

Sweeping historical epic with many compelling portrait shots.

Entertaining, if a bit Hollywood, cyberpunk-esque detective-thriller.

Christine

Year: 1983
Director: John Carpenter
Writer: Bill Phillips
Rating: 9/10

Based on a book by Stephen King about a malevolent car - sounds like a terribly cheesy basis for a horror movie, but John Carpenter somehow makes it into a classic.
